Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 4 at the Pickering Nuclear Station, which is located in Ontario, Canada, and is owned by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), shut down on Saturday, July 8, due to an electrical power supply failure. Plant officials are still surveying the cause; however, repairs have begun on the 542-megawatt (MW) unit.

Officials stated that they hope to return the unit online as soon as possible after repairs are complete; however, the unit's time offline will depend on the extent of the repairs and any extended repairs that they may have to address while the unit is down. Plant officials said that the unit could be ready to return online by Tuesday, July 17, if there are no delays.

Unit 4 completed a planned maintenance inspection outage about a month ago after shutting down in May. The unit returned online June 8. Pickering Nuclear Plant became operational in 1971. When the plant is at full load, it has a generating capacity totaling 3,244 MW. The three other generators (units 5-8) will remain online and run at full capacity.

OPG is an electricity generation-based company whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity in Ontario. OPG's generating portfolio has a capacity of over 22,000 MW, which is one of the largest in North America. Assets include three nuclear stations, five fossil fueled stations, 64 hydroelectric stations and three wind-generating stations.
