University of Minnesota Duluth awards Johnson Wilson Constructors $15.2 Million Life Science Building Renovation Project

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) recently celebrated the ceremonial start of construction on a $15.2 million Life Science Building renovation project. Duluth’s Johnson Wilson Constructors have been tapped by UMD to run the project, which will serve the research and academic needs of the College of Pharmacy and the Department of Biology. First reported by Industrial Info in October 2004 (reference: Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database), the project is expected to be complete in mid-2007.

Designed by LHB Engineers & Architects (Duluth, Minnesota), the nearly 80,000 square foot facility will house the Paddock Laboratories Pharmacy Education Center on the first and second floors. Consisting of five classrooms, two large labs, study space, computer labs, and a student lounge, the Center was named in honor of Duluth native Bruce Paddock, president of Minneapolis-based Paddock Laboratories. Paddock Laboratories donated $2 million toward the renovation of the Life Science Building and the furthering of pharmacy education efforts at UMD. The school hopes graduates of the program, aided by the improved and expanded facilities, will help address the state’s escalating demand for pharmacists.

The UMD Department of Biology will be located on the ground and third floors of the building. The department’s new space will include 6 new instructional laboratories for plant and animal science courses, chemical preparation and storage areas, wet and dry animal collections, a laboratory preparation room, greenhouse preparation areas, 2 research laboratories and offices for faculty, staff and graduate students. The Department of Biology is one of UMD's largest undergraduate programs, serving over 600 majors and pre-professional students.
