Unplanned Outage Extended at Cardinal Coal Unit in Brilliant, Ohio
The 650-megawatt Unit 3 of the Cardinal Power Station in Brilliant, Ohio, which is owned by Buckeye Power Incorporated, has been offline for repairs since the unit shut down on October 19.
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 650-megawatt (MW) Unit 3 of the Cardinal Power Station in Brilliant, Ohio, which is owned by Buckeye Power Incorporated (Columbus, Ohio), has been offline for repairs since the unit shut down on October 19.
The unit was forced offline for boiler issues and was due to return online three days later. But plant officials extended it eight more days because of a boiler feed pump failure, saying that they will bring another pump in from an offsite location in Charleston. The unit's return online will be based on the timeline of the pump's arrival on site. Plant sources said that they hope to have the pump onsite and installed in about a week--October 29, if all goes to their plan.
The Cardinal Power Plant has three generating units, with a total generating capacity of 1,880 megawatts. Units 1 and 2 began operating in 1967, and Unit 3 in 1977. Unit 2 remains offline in a planned outage that will extend into 2011.
Buckeye Power is the generation and transmission cooperative that is jointly owned by the 25 electric distribution cooperatives in Ohio; of these, 24 are based in the state and get their electricity from Buckeye Power. The other is Midwest Energy Cooperative (Cassopolis, Michigan), which serves about 1,000 members in parts of Fulton and William counties, in northwestern Ohio.
