Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than 275 maintenance-related projects at U.S. automotive facilities this summer, 75% of which are located in the two regional powerhouses for domestic auto manufacturing: the Great Lakes and the Southeast. Regular maintenance is crucial to the industry, which is facing a challenging environment due to a growing backlog of unsold new vehicles and President Trump's threat to slap a heavy tariff on Mexican imports, which account for nearly half of auto parts used domestically.

General Motors Corporation (NYSE:GM) (Detroit, Michigan) and its subsidiaries account for nine maintenance projects this summer, the most for any company. In its home state of Michigan, GM is preparing for normal, semi-annual inspections and repairs at its Delta Township Manufacturing Plant in Lansing, Grand River Assembly and Stamping Plant in Lansing, and assembly plant in Lake Orion. All three are set to begin and end in the first half of July. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Delta Township, Grand River and Lake Orion.

GM's Global Propulsion Systems subsidiary is preparing for a two-part maintenance shutdown at its aluminum castings plant in Defiance, Ohio. The facility will see a pair of one- to two-week turnarounds starting in August and ending in December, involving regularly scheduled inspections and repairs. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Another major player in the Great Lakes region is Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE:FCAU) (London, England), which is preparing for July turnarounds at its automotive stamping plant in Warren, Michigan, which produces 3.6 million parts per year; its engine plant in Dundee, Michigan, which produces 500,000 units per year; its North Liberty Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio, where the company plans to manufacture components for its Jeep Wrangler Plug-in Hybrid, which it expects to launch next year; and its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, which manufactures the company's Jeep Cherokee.

The Belvidere facility is set for more than 1,400 job cuts, announced earlier this year, in the coming months. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Warren, Dundee, Toledo and Belvidere projects.

Automotive maintenance projects in the U.S. Southeast are led by a components manufacturer: Denso Corporation (Kariya, Japan), the world's second-largest auto parts supplier. Denso is preparing for three shutdowns in early July, for regular inspections and repairs: a starter alternator manufacturing plant and an engine-control unit manufacturing plant at its complex in Maryville, Tennessee, and a manufacturing plant for ignition, exhaust and gasoline delivery systems at its complex in Albert, Tennessee.

Earlier this year, Denso announced it planned to emphasize its vehicle-electrification and autonomous-driving businesses as it pursues new directions in the auto industry. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the starter alternator, engine-control unit and ignition, exhaust and gasoline delivery projects.

Dongwon Metal Company Limited (Seoul, South Korea) is one of many foreign-owned companies to set up shop in the U.S. South, with subsidiary Dongwon Autopart Technology Alabama LLC manufacturing door frames, impact beams, molded parts and other components for more than 15 years. The subsidiary is preparing for shutdowns at its door frame plant in Luverne, Alabama, and its stamping plant in Hogansville, Georgia, both in early July. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the door frame and stamping projects.
