Among the largest projects set to kick off in the region in the upcoming quarter is Phase I of a light rail modernization project in Chicago, Illinois. As part of the first phase of the Red-Purple modernization program, this project involves rebuilding four stations with wider platforms, elevators, improved lighting, and new track and support structures along a 1.3-mile stretch to improve transit service and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Walsh Group (Chicago) is the design-build firm on the project, which is set to wrap up in 2024. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
As people remain socially distanced in the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of computers to socially interact and shop has become prevalent, and a few projects in the region highlight the need for facilities to maintain this trend. Facebook Incorporated (NASDAQ:FB) (Menlo Park, California) plans to kick off a Phase IV expansion of its data center campus in New Albany, Ohio. The project consists of constructing a 450,000-square-foot data hall, which will be powered from renewable energy sources, to enhance global data services and infrastructure. Turner Construction Company (Columbus, Ohio) is the general contractor on the project, which is set to be completed in 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) is the North American leader in e-commerce and will begin constructing a grassroot delivery center in Cleveland, Ohio, in the upcoming quarter. The 112,000-square-foot facility will feature 15 loading docks and 60 van-loading spaces. The center will support operations for the South Cleveland region. Construction is set to kick off early in the quarter and be completed this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
On the shores of Green Bay in Marinette, Wisconsin, Marinette Maritime Corporation (Marinette) will be expanding its shipyard by constructing an approximately 150,000-square-foot final hull erection and outfitting hall and a 40,000-square-foot paint and blasting facility along with an expansion of the existing fabrication and panel line. In addition, a state-of-the-art ship-lift system will be installed in order to construct frigates for the United States Navy. The estimated $100 million project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) is planning a couple of projects at its appliance manufacturing facility in Louisville, Kentucky. A new dishwasher manufacturing line along with automation equipment and robotics will be installed to support increased demand, and on the same campus a refrigerator manufacturing facility will be upgraded by adding new tooling and equipment for the door and case areas to manufacture four-door refrigerator models. Work on the refrigerator plant is expected to be completed later this year, followed by the dishwasher line in early 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the dishwasher line and refrigerator plant.
The Great Lakes region is known for its dominance in the automotive sector, and several such projects are set to kick off in the region in the upcoming quarter. These include General Motors Company's (NYSE:GM) (Detroit, Michigan) expansion of a transmission manufacturing plant in Toledo, Ohio. New machinery and production equipment will be installed at the 2.8 million-square-foot plant to increase production capacity of 10-speed transmissions for full-size trucks such as the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
