Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With increased sales in new-home and renovation projects, roofing manufacturers are very optimistic this year about the market for asphalt felts and coating. Builder confidence is at its highest level since 2005, in part due to President Trump's vow to strengthen investments in infrastructure. Industrial Info is tracking $123 million in asphalt felts and coating projects in the U.S.
IKO Industries Limited's (Toronto, Ontario) proposed, $3 million expansion of a shingles manufacturing plant in Kankakee, Illinois, involves constructing a 15,000-square-foot addition to an existing 250,000-square-foot facility and installing a new ice and water production line. Construction is expected to begin in fall of this year, with completion in spring of 2018. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
IKO also is at work on a $100 million asphalt felt and coating plant in Hillsboro, Texas, a 250,000-square-foot facility that began construction began in the spring of 2016 and is expected to be completed this summer. Bob Moore Construction Incorporated (Arlington, Texas) is serving as general contractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Soprema Incorporated (Wadsworth, Ohio) is proposing a $20 million asphalt felt and coating plant expansion in Wadsworth, Ohio, comprising a 25,000-square-foot addition to an existing, three-building campus. Construction is expected to begin this summer and is to be completed late 2017. Campbell Construction (Wadsworth) is serving as general contractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
U.S. manufacturers are optimistic about continued growth, including manufacturers of waterproofing materials used in shingles and coatings, who have projected a 4% annual growth rate in their business through 2019, according to Principia Consulting. Reid Ribble, the chief executive officer of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), expressed optimism earlier this year, in an interview with Replacement Contractor Online, that the Trump administration would aim to roll back "egregious regulations" affecting the roofing industry.
Other major challenges facing roofing manufacturers include keeping up with the demand for low- and steep-slope roofing. Manufacturers are providing more roofing products through more efficient technologies, like laminated shingles with different designs, colors and shapes, according to a press release from IKO Commercial. With the introduction of computer-controlled systems in shingle manufacturing, plants have improved product uniformity in terms of raw material use, shingle weight, product dimensional control and appearance.
