Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--After a devasting bout of avian influenza in 2022 and 2023 in the U.S. egg-laying sector, the industry is poised for recovery. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that egg production fell to a five-year low of 9.1 billion dozen in 2022, at the height of the virus. After avian flu become less of a factor in late 2023, the U.S. egg-laying sector began recovering and, according to the USDA's most recent forecast, is set to hit a record-breaking 10.8 billion dozen by 2033 as the laying population increases and the U.S. population consumes more eggs.

Not only the eggs make it to the table, but also the broilers hatched in special facilities that are allowed to age to consumable size. The USDA reports that turkey and broiler meat are the most consumed form of protein in the U.S., accounting for 46% of red meat and poultry consumption in 2023.

As the sector recovers, companies have begun implementing projects to develop new sites or expand production at existing laying facilities and hatcheries. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1 billion worth of active projects in this sector.

Near Bouse, Arizona, located in the west of the state near the California border, Rose Acre Farms Incorporated is running the gamut of the poultry sector with both a hatchery and egg-processing facility. Rose Acre Farms provides not only eggs in the shell, but also liquid eggs and dried egg products. The company offers a variety of white and brown eggs, including cage-free and nutritionally enriched versions. About 10 miles south of Bouse, the company is underway with construction of a 2.2 million-square-foot grassroot facility that will include a layer farm, pullet farm and egg-processing facility to develop its products. Shipping will be aided by a rail spur. Construction kicked off in late 2023 and is expected to be completed toward the end of this year. One of the nation's largest egg producers, Cal-Maine Foods Incorporated (Ridgeland, Mississippi), is catering to a trending demand for cage-free eggs by converting an existing traditional facility into a cage-free operation. Twelve chicken houses are being renovated and converted to the new method, and one further cage-free house is being added to the campus. Each chicken house is approximately 43,000 square feet, which will result in more than 500,000 square feet of cage-free production. Work on the project kicked off in 2023 and is expected to be completed this summer. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.

Cal-Maine also is adding a 50,000-square-foot cage-free layer house to its campus in Pittsburg, Texas, which is expected to be completed later this year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

In Le Sueur, Minnesota, Michael Foods Incorporated (Hopkins, Minnesota), which produces foods like cooked scrambled egg products, pre-boiled eggs and omelets as well as bulk liquid eggs for the catering sector, plans to renovate a laying complex formerly owned by Rembrandt Foods (Rembrandt, Iowa). The 408,000-square-foot complex is being rebuilt and renovated (eight to nine chicken houses) into a cage-free facility, and further renovations are occurring in the packing facility. The project is expected to kick off this summer, putting it on track for completion by the end of 2026. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.

While not as prevalent as chicken facilities, turkey hatcheries also feature in the existing U.S. project landscape. Most notably, Select Genetics (Willmar, Minnesota) a few months ago began construction of a grassroot turkey hatchery in Goldsboro, North Carolina, employing Jackson Builders Incorporated (Goldsboro, North Carolina) as general contractor. The 100,000-square-foot building will employ state-of-the machinery and systems that will enable Select Genetics to hatch about 55 million eggs per year. The plant will supply the company's customers in the eastern U.S. The plant will add more than 20 jobs to the area when it is completed in the spring of 2026.
