Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fueled by the nation's abundant supply of natural gas, an array of power plant projects are set to get under way early next year. Industrial Info is tracking 617 U.S. power generation projects worth $28.78 billion that are expected to kick off in first-quarter 2016. Well over half of the total investment value (TIV) is located in just three regions, the Southwest, Northeast and West Coast.
Roughly a third of the TIV--$9.38 billion--is tied to projects that are in the planning phases, where plenty of factors still could increase, decrease or totally eliminate the expected spending. The remaining $19.41 billion is connected to projects that are in engineering or early construction.
The Southwest leads all other regions, with nearly $7 billion in projected power generation projects in the first quarter. Among the highest-value projects in the region is FGE Power LLC's (The Woodlands, Texas) $800 million combined cycle power plant in Mitchell County, Texas. Starwood Energy Group Global LLC (Greenwich, Connecticut) is the co-developer of the planned 747-megawatt (MW) facility, which is expected to be completed in second-quarter 2018. SNC-Lavalin (TSX:SNC) (Montreal, Quebec) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. For more information on the project, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Northeast region comes in second, with $4.74 billion in project investments. Advanced Power AG's (Zug, Switzerland) $1.4 billion Cricket Valley combined-cycle power station in Dover Plains, New York is expected to be completed in first-quarter 2019. Bechtel Corporation (San Francisco, California) is the EPC firm for the 1,000-MW plant project, which will include three 200-MW natural gas-fired General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) combustion turbine engines, with three heat recovery steam generators, and three steam turbine generator sets. For more information on the project, see Industrial Info's project report.
The West Coast region has $4.56 billion in power generation projects that are planned for kickoff in the first quarter. This includes NRG Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey) $600 million brownfield simple-cycle plant in Carlsbad, California. The 600-MW facility will include six 100MW General Electric combustion turbines, each rated at 100 MW, plus auxiliary equipment. Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing the engineering for the project, which is expected to be completed in early 2018.
