Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--State-owned Corporacion Electrica de Venezuela (Corpoelec) recently inaugurated the second simple-cycle combustion unit at the Josefa Camejo Thermal Power Station in the state of Falcón.
Construction of the grassroot natural-gas-fired plant began in 2006, and the first 150-megawatt (MW) unit came online in November 2008. The third unit is expected to start operations in November of this year. All of the units are equipped with Siemens AG (NYSE: SI) (Munich, Germany) SGT6-5000F 150-MW combustion turbines. The three units will add 450 MW of power to the national grid.
The estimated total investment cost of the Josefa Camejo Power Plant was $450 million. Currently, the plant is operating in open-cycle mode, but plant officials revealed to Industrial Info that they are planning to move to combined-cycle mode or add three more combustion units.
Several regional electric companies have been incorporated into the national supervision of Corpoelec since 2007. Electric Energy of Barquisimeto operates in the states of Lara, Carabobo, and Yaracuy. The Electric Energy Company of Venezuela controls Zulia and Falcón. Caroní Electricity is in charge of Bolívar and Amazonas. Other states are grouped under the administration of Anonymous Electricity Fomentation and Administration Company.
