Vietnam currently produces 38% of its energy from coal-fired power plants, but coal-fired generation projects were not included in the nation's upcoming Master Plan Development List VIII. Furthermore, coal-fired plants published in Master Plan VII from 2017 have been delayed, due to local authorities' revisions to environmental compliance requirements.

Based on the latest research and forecasts for 2030, coal-fired power plants are expected to supply 53% of Vietnam's electricity output, since the development of hydropower projects has slowed and is not expected to accelerate in the near future.
