Vitamin Giant NBTY Good for New York's Economic Health with $14.5 Million Investment

NBTY (NasdaqNM: NBTY) (Bohemia, New York) is planning to break ground in June on a $14.5 million distribution center. The new facility will be located in the Bayport development within the town of Islip, New York. The state of Illinois lobbied hard to win the project, but New York was the victor, aided in part by offering attractive tax incentives.

Under a variety of brand names, NBTY offers over 1,000 products including vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, sports nutrition products, diet aids and other nutritional supplements. Besides manufacturing, packaging and distribution, they also own and operate the Vitamin World and Nutrition Warehouse stores.

When the 140,000 square foot distribution facility is complete by the end of this year, the company expects to add 150 new employees. The project is being built adjacent to NBTY's existing soft gel cap manufacturing plant. That plant was built in 1998 at the cost of $50 million and currently employs almost 400.
