Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Big box retail giant, Wal-Mart Stores Incorporated (NYSE:WMT)(Bentonville, Arkansas) is a bustle with construction activity at the site of yet another distribution center, this one located in Sterling, Illinois.
The company purchased a site just off Interstate 88 in Sterling, located about 100 miles west of Chicago, as the site for a new one million square foot distribution facility that will be outfitted in the latest automated storage and retrieval systems, representing about $70 million in capital investment costs.
Wal-Mart selected Walton Construction (Saint Louis, Missouri) as the general contractor for the project. Walton has been onsite since the fall of 2004 preparing the site and building pad for the center. All of the tilt-up concrete wall construction is almost complete and the structure should be completely under roof within the next 60 days.
It will take an additional 9 to 10 months to complete the internal construction and equipment installation, and the center is scheduled to be fully stocked and distributing product by January of 2006.
Wal-Mart Stores Incorporated has annual sales of $244.5 billion and operates more than 2,870 discount stores, Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets, and more than 520 Sam's Clubs in the United States. Internationally, the company operates about 1,275 units. Wal-Mart employs over 1.3 million associates worldwide.
