Westar Energy Completes Construction of Windfarm in Kansas

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Central Plains Power LLC, a subsidiary of Westar Energy Incorporated (NYSE:WR) (Topeka, Kansas), has completed construction and is in the commissioning stages of the $170 million, 99-megawatt (MW) Central Plains windfarm project located in Marienthal, Kansas.

Construction began in July 2008 and was completed in the fall. Westar Energy anticipates full commercial operation of the facility by the end of January. The project consisted of constructing 33 3-MW Vestas Wind Systems V90 model wind turbine generators in Wichita County near Marienthal. The windfarm is one of three projects that Westar will acquire power from. Collectively the projects total 250 MW of renewable energy, which is enough to power nearly 88,000 homes and bring the company closer to reaching its goal of 500 MW of renewable energy by 2010.

Renewable Energy Systems Americas Incorporated (RES) (Broomfield, Colorado) provided the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the project and will operate the facility it is once operational.
