Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The World Bank financial delegation, which is visiting Egypt to meet the Minister of Electricity, confirmed that the bank is going to proceed in its plan to support and strengthen current and future projects in the Egyptian electricity sector. This is the bank's first visit to Egypt after the revolution that began in January.

During this visit, Egyptian minister Dr. Hassan Yunis presented the ministry plan for future and current projects to the bank delegation, including the 1,300-megawatt (MW) Ain Sokhna Gas/Oil Fired Power Station; the North Giza 1,500-MW N/G Fired Power Plant; the Kureimat 150-MW Solar/N-G Fired Power Plant; and the Kom Ombo 100-MW Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant. The minister said that the bank supported the power-generating sector and financed many transmission and distribution projects.

One of the most important projects that will be financed with aid of the World Bank is the West Nile 200-MW windfarm, which is near the Beni Suwayf governorate, 220 kilometers south of Cairo. The wind data from this location shows high potential, with average wind speeds of about 7 meters per second at 40 meters above ground level, and power density ranging from 350 to 900 watts per square meter.

The project will be one of the government projects which the Renewable Energy Authority will own and operate. The estimated cost for the projects is about $450 million, and it is expected to feed energy to the national grid in 2014.

The project is part of the next Five Year Plan (2012-17), which was designed to add 12,000 MW to the Egyptian generating capacity, with investments valued at $ 20 billion.
