Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Shandong Electric Power Construction No. 2 Company (SEPCO2) (Jinan, Shandong) won the contract for the construction and erection of State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation's (SNPTC) (Beijing) first CAP1400 Nuclear Demonstration Power Unit, according to Power Construction Corporation of China (Power China) (Beijing).
A subsidiary of Power China, SEPCO2 is expanding its presence in nuclear plant construction. In 2013, the company won the construction and installation contract for Unit 5 of the Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station.
SNPTC's CAP1400 Nuclear Demonstration Power Project is located at Shidao Bay in Rongcheng of Weihai City, in northern China's Shandong province. The project is a joint investment between SNPTC and China Huaneng Group Corporation (Beijing). It will have one third-generation passive nuclear power demonstration unit, based on SNPTC's CAP1400 pressurized water reactor, with a capacity of 1,400 megawatts (MW), 60 years of service life, and a total investment of about $3.2 billion.
According to the schedule, the unit will begin operations in 2019. The project is meant to improve the reliability of the grid's power supply and optimize the energy structure in Shandong.
Following the shrinking of the traditional power construction market, subsidiaries of Power China have been expanding in the nuclear power construction market. Power China has built eight of the 20 operational nuclear power units in China. Of the 30 nuclear power units currently under construction in China, 12 were contracted to Power China. As one of the leading nuclear power contractors, SEPCO2 has participated in the construction of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, Lingao Nuclear Power Station and Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station in South China's Guangdong province.
