Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $2 billion worth of projects involving construction services firm Balfour Beatty plc (London, England), including more than $950 million in the U.S. The projects cover a range of geographies and industries, including Power, Pharmaceutical-Biotech and Industrial Manufacturing.

One of Balfour Beatty's biggest projects is underway in San Francisco, and San Jose, California, where the company is providing general contracting services in the electrification conversion on the Caltrain rail line that runs between the two cities. The project entails converting Caltrain's diesel-hauled trains to electric multiple unit trains, and electrifying approximately 50 miles of track. The project kicked off in 2017. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Balfour Beatty also is involved in a few projects at universities in North Carolina. Among these is the addition of a science research building at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. Balfour Beatty will construct and equip a four-story building of approximately 120,000-150,000 square feet to provide research space for multiple disciplines. In addition, a utilities building will be constructed to provide hot and chilled water to the new building and other buildings. Construction on the $101 million project kicked off in third-quarter 2018 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

At North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, Balfour Beatty is at work on the Engineering Research & Innovation Complex (ERIC). The work follows the demolition of a previous building and entails constructing a new four-story, 130,000-square-foot, LEED-certified building with laboratories, manufacturing and teaching space, and supporting utilities. The $90 million project kicked off in early 2019 and is expected to wrap up toward mid-2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Industrial Info also is tracking several projects involving Balfour Beatty in Europe. Among the largest of these is the construction of a 320-kilovolt high-voltage, direct-current (HVDC) power transmission line between England and France. The 51-kilometer, double-circuit transmission line will run between the two countries via the Channel Tunnel to supply 1,000 megawatts (MW) of power to both countries. Construction began in 2017 and will be completed this summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Edinburgh, Scotland, Balfour Beatty is underway with a rebuild project at the science complex of the University of Edinburgh. The project will bring 220,660 square feet of additional research space and will integrate existing and new buildings into one mini-campus with a total of 320,000 square feet of research space. The project is expected to be completed early next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Balfour Beatty's project footprint also extends into Southeast Asia. Among the company's projects in the region is the construction of a couple of grassroot hydropower stations near Bireuën, Indonesia. A 42.2-MW plant is nearing completion, and a 44.2-MW plant is expected to be completed in the first half of 2022. The projects entail the construction of four hydraulic turbine generator sets to supply renewable energy to the local grid. The projects have a combined estimated total investment value of more than $136 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Peusangan I and Peusangan II stations.
