The pandemic has highlighted three major trends within the industry: vaccine development, cell and gene therapies and monoclonal antibodies.
Vaccine Development--In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and unprecedented public-private partnerships to pool resources, vaccine development has hit "Warp Speed." Traditional vaccine development using weaker strains of a virus has been accompanied by the use of messenger RNA (mRNA) to target viruses and elicit immune responses.
Cell and Gene Therapies--This cohort is used to manipulate human cells and genomes to create customized drugs, which are rapidly gaining traction as a large portion of this industry moves toward personalized medicine. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first-ever gene therapy drug, called Kymriah, which was produced in 2017.
Monoclonal Antibodies--These products are lab-grown antibodies designed to restore, enhance or mimic an immune system response, particularly in cancer cells. While these antibodies have formed the basis of biotechnology for some time, they are now being modified in new ways. Also, biosimilars, which are essentially generic biologics, are rapidly being developed.
