Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced additional resources to expand meat and poultry processing capacity in the U.S., including a program to provide processors with technical assistance for federal funding grant applicants and grant-funded projects.
The Meat and Poultry Processing Capacity Technical Assistance Program (MPPTA) will initially include three non-profit organizations that will coordinate and provide technical assistance in four areas, according to a press release: federal grant application management; business development and financial planning; meat and poultry processing technical and operational support; and supply chain development. The program is part of the Biden administration's "Action Plan for a Fairer, More Competitive and More Resilient Meat and Poultry Supply Chain," which will dedicate $1 billion in federal funding for independent processing capacity.
According to a White House press release, a lack of competition in the meat and poultry processing sector can create a bottleneck in the supply chain: four large meatpacking companies control 85% of the beef market. In poultry, the top four processing firms control 54% of the market.
Processors involved with the existing Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grant (MPIRG) program and the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP) can access the technical assistance.
Through the MPIRG program, the USDA has awarded $32 million in grants to 167 meat and poultry slaughtering and processing facilities to support expanded capacity and efficiency; the application process for another round of funding, totaling $23.6 million, is underway through mid-May. The MPPEP is offering $150 million in grants, of up to $25 million each, also to expand processing capacity.

In Missouri, American Foods Group's (Green Bay, Wisconsin) $500 million grassroot cattle slaughtering and processing plant in Wright City, Missouri is in the late planning stage. Construction on the 500,000-square-foot facility will begin in July. Subscribers can click here for more information.
Industrial Info is tracking $3.1 billion worth of poultry-related projects in the U.S, including several by industry titan Tyson Foods Incorporated (NYSE:TSN) (Springdale, Arkansas).
In March, Tyson kicked off a poultry processing plant expansion in Vicksburg, Mississippi, which entails constructing a building addition and new processing and packing machines. Completion is expected in November. Late last year, Tyson kicked off another plant expansion, at its poultry slaughtering and processing plant in Seguin, Texas. The project involves constructing a 40,000-square-foot building addition and installing new state-of-the-art machinery to increase production capacity.
