Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--At the start of 2022, U.S. biofuel plant production capacity totaled 21 billion gallons per year, more than 80% of which was for fuel ethanol, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Just three states--Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois--account for half of the total U.S. ethanol production; with nine of the other states in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions, they account for 12 of the top 13 ethanol-producing states nationwide. Industrial Info is tracking about $3.6 billion worth of active ethanol-related projects across the Midwest and Great Lakes regions, nearly half of which are found in Iowa.

A single company accounts for nearly 20% of the total investments, and nearly 40% of the total investments within Iowa: Cargill Incorporated (Minnetonka, Minnesota), one of the largest privately held companies in the U.S., which began a $300 million expansion at its corn milling and ethanol plant in Eddyville, Iowa, in November 2021. At the same site, Cargill is working with Helm U.S. Corporation, a subsidiary of Helm AG (Hamburg, Germany), on a $300 million butanediol unit addition.

The new unit will use fermented corn sugar feedstock from the Eddyville site to produce renewable butanediol (BDO), a key ingredient for acetylenic chemicals used in everyday household products, including fabrics and cleaning solutions. Cargill and Helm formed a joint venture, called Qore (pronounced "core"), to develop the project. Qore's BDO product, called Qira, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 93% when compared with traditional fossil-fuel sources, according to Cargill. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Food & Beverage Project Database can read detailed project reports on the expansion and unit addition.

Cargill also is performing a $50 million expansion at its ethanol plant in Fort Dodge, Iowa. About 45 miles to the southeast, VERBIO North America Corporation (Livonia, Michigan), a subsidiary of VERBIO Vereinigte BioEnergie AG (Leipzig, Germany), kicked off an $80 million ethanol unit addition at its renewable natural gas (RNG) plant in Nevada, Iowa. VERBIO says its plant will be the first industrial-scale RNG plant in North America to use agricultural residues as its feedstock. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Fort Dodge and Nevada projects.

Chief Industries Incorporated (Grand Island, Nebraska) is evaluating prospects for the two largest ethanol projects currently proposed for Nebraska: carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) systems at its ethanol plants in Hastings and Lexington. Chief Industries was encouraged by the passage of the Nebraska Geologic Storage of Carbon Dioxide Act in early 2021, which developed and clarified the regulatory and permitting process for CCS projects. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Hastings and Lexington projects.

"We see Nebraska's forward-thinking support of carbon dioxide sequestration as a springboard for differentiating Nebraska's ethanol industry and we are excited to expand upon this vision by aligning with Chief," said Jeff Rawls, the chief executive officer of Catahoula Resources (Houston, Texas), a portfolio company that invests in midstream infrastructure, in a press release. Catahoula is supporting Chief's CCS projects financially. "The use of proven carbon-capture infrastructure targeting nearby, low-cost storage is a compelling plan for investment in the local economies of Nebraska."

CCS technology already has taken center stage in the fossil-fuel industry, where it is used in the production of "blue" materials such as hydrogen and ammonia. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which was recently signed into law by President Joe Biden, sharply boosts tax credits for CCS projects.
