Among the active projects involving McCarthy are a few solar power projects. These include Silicon Ranch Corporation's (Nashville, Tennessee) 102.5-megawatt solar farm in Calhoun County, Georgia, in the southeast part of the state. The facility will provide energy to Facebook Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FB) (Meno Park, California) new 970,000-square-foot data center in Stanton Springs, Georgia, which is expected to be operational next year. Construction on the solar farm kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the solar farm and data center.
In Texas, McCarthy is at work on a few projects for the Port of Houston Authority. In La Porte, McCarthy is rehabilitating Wharf 3 of the Barbours Cut Terminal by performing demolition and upgrading the dock to install 100-foot dockside cranes as well as constructing a new stevedore support building. Also at the Barbours Cut Terminal, McCarthy is modernizing two container yards through a series of steps that include repaving the yards, and installing mast lighting and additional equipment to increase port operations. The projects are expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the wharf rehabilitation and the container yard modernizations.
In Seabrook, Texas, McCarthy is extending the spur rail line at the Bayport Terminal by constructing 6,500 track feet of rail and a highway crossing to connect with a planned container freight station at an intermodal facility. The project will increase the capacity and efficiency of the port's rail system. The project kicked off late last year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Some of McCarthy's biggest projects are in the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry, and by far its largest project in this sector is the $1.25 billion construction of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kansas, for the Department of Homeland Security. McCarthy is construction manager in a joint venture with Mortenson Construction (Minneapolis, Minnesota). The 574,000-square-foot facility will feature laboratories with varying biosafety levels that will be used to research, detect and analyze integrated human, foreign animal and zoonotic diseases, as well as to develop livestock vaccines. Construction of the facility kicked off in 2015, and it is expected to be operational in 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among McCarthy's other large Pharma-Biotech projects is the construction of a laboratory building at Washington University's campus in St. Louis, Missouri. The project entails constructing a 600,000-square-foot neuroscience research laboratory building to LEED-Silver specifications. The facility will include 350,000 square feet of wet lab space and a 150,000-square-foot vivarium. Construction is expected to kick off early next year, for completion in 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
McCarthy also is at work on a few Pharma-Biotech projects in California. Among these is Gilead Sciences Incorporated's expansion of its campus in Foster City, in the Bay Area. The long-term project includes an array of activities, including construction of a cardiovascular research and development building, the demolition of approximately 11 buildings and the construction of approximately 14 new buildings, including three lab buildings. The projects have a combined total investment value of $470 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the cardiovascular research facility and the campus expansion.
