Among the Power projects is a planned transmission line from the U.S.-Canada border to supply the New Hampshire grid. Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) (Boston, Massachusetts) is developing the project with design engineering firm Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri). PAR Electrical Contractors Incorporated is acting as general contractor on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $785 million for the U.S. portion. Sixty miles of the 153-mile high-voltage direct-current transmission line will be underground. The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report and Noevember 20, 2017, article - DOE Green Lights Northern Pass Canada-to-New England Power Transmission Project.
A few natural gas-fired power stations also feature in the region's project activity. Among these is NRG Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NRG) (Houston, Texas) brownfield, 330-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired plant in Sandwich, Massachusetts. The facility will be constructed on a 52-acre site at an existing power plant. Burns & McDonnell is performing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on the project, which is set to kick in the first quarter of next year and be completed in summer 2019. The project has an estimated TIV of $320 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Maine, NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) plans to construct a 100-MW solar plant at a former air force base near the town of Limestone. The project is expected to take about a year to complete and has an estimated total investment value of $200 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the region's top projects planned to kick off next year is construction of a microgrid addition at the naval submarine base in Groton, Connecticut. The 13-MW microgrid will incorporate an existing 8-MW power plant, a solar power facility, a cogeneration turbine and a diesel generator to provide constant power to the base. The project has an estimated total investment value of $1.1 billion and is expected to kick off in the second quarter of next year and be completed in early 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the Industrial Manufacturing projects is a dredging expansion of the Boston Deepwater Port. The Massachusetts Port Authority (Boston, Massachusetts) plans to widen and deepen the main channel from 40 feet to 51 feet and will perform improvements to accommodate larger vessels and increase the port's operational capacity. The $310 million project is expected to take about three years to complete. The New England district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is performing engineering. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Also in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (Boston) plans to begin an extension of its Green Rail commuter line in the Greater Boston area. The initial phases of the project have an estimated TIV of $340 million and will include construction of 1.3 miles of rail line consisting of three new stations, a bridge and new bus station. GLX Constructors (Littleton, Massachusetts), a joint venture that includes Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas), is performing design-build work on the project, which is expected to take about a year and half to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report and November 28, 2017, article - Design-Build Team Picked for On-Again, Off-Again Boston Green Line Extension.
