Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Rocky Mountains market region is preparing for more than $66.4 billion in industrial project starts in 2018. While some of these projects will be delayed or cancelled, other projects will be added to the region as the year progresses. The Rocky Mountains region includes Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. The Power Industry, with $20.5 billion in planned project starts, leads in terms of the value of projects, followed by the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, with $19.3 billion in planned projects.

Renewables, particularly wind, lead the region's planned spending in the Power Industry. Among the large projects planned to kick off in the region is Xcel Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) 552-megawatt (MW) Sagamore wind project near Portales, New Mexico. The project will use 250 2.08-MW wind turbine-generators and has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $865 million. Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) is the project manager. Construction is expected to last a little more than two years. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
While wind features prominently in the region, solar projects can be found in the regions's sunnier states. Near Boulder City, Nevada, SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) (San Jose, California) is developing a 50-MW Phase III addition to an existing 150-MW solar farm. The initial 100-MW Phase I of the project was completed in early 2016, followed by a 50-MW Phase II in early 2017. The new project is planned to kick off in the second quarter and be completed by the end of the year. Phase III has an estimated TIV of $250 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I, Phase II and Phase III of the solar farm.
Power transmission and distribution spending also can be found in the Rockies region's 2018 project starts. In Arizona, Southwestern Power Group II LLC (Phoenix, Arizona) is developing a 500-kilovolt transmission line from the Willow substation to the Pinal Central substation. The two overhead, single-circuit lines will require three to four support structures per mile. Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing engineering for the project, which has an estimated TIV of $437.9 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
A high-speed rail project dominates the region's planned spending in the Industrial Manufacturing Industry. In Nevada, XpressWest (Las Vegas, Nevada) is developing a 185-mile double electric train track from Victorville, California, to Las Vegas next to Interstate 15. Another 60 miles of electric track is being considered from Victorville to Palmdale, California, which proponents say will increase ridership and reduce major pollutants by 40%. The project, which remains in the planning stages, is planned to kick off by the end of next year, taking about six years to complete. The project has an estimated TIV of $7.8 billion. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. While Industrial Info has rated this project as having a medium probability (70%-80%) of kicking off, the previous kickoff date has already slipped by 20 months.
Also in Nevada, Apple Incorporated (NASDAQ:AAPL) (Cupertino, California) plans to expand a data center in Reno. The project plans to add eight buildings with additional area of 372,890 square feet to the existing data center. The facility will serve as a data management center for Apple's Siri, FaceTime and iMessages services. Construction is planned to kick off early next year and be completed in the first quarter of 2019. Stantec (Edmonton, Alberta) is providing engineering for the project, which has an estimated TIV of $1 billion. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Colorado, Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) (Bethesda, Maryland) is developing a space systems manufacturing plant in Littleton. At the company's existing Waterton Canyon campus, general contractor Hensel Phelps Construction Company (Thornton, Colorado) will construct an approximately 266,000-square-foot building to manufacture satellites. Construction will take about two years to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
