Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company (New Haven, Connecticut) is providing construction and/or engineering services in every U.S. geographic region through its work in four industries: Power, Pharmaceutical & Biotech, Food & Beverage and Industrial Manufacturing. A single, closely watched renewables project dominates the power business, while universities account for much of the pharmaceutical work. Industrial Info is tracking more than $4.3 billion worth of projects that involve Whiting-Turner, almost half of which are projects under construction.
The single largest project, Solar Wind Energy Tower Incorporated's (Annapolis, Maryland) $1.55 billion wind energy tower in San Luis, Arizona, has faced difficulties obtaining necessary permits for construction. Recently, however, Solar Wind Energy Tower announced it had executed a five-year development and development rights agreement with the City of San Luis to support permitting and construction, as well as a 50 years of water supply. The company also recently extended the closing date for the outside land purchase agreement to December 2018.
Whiting-Turner is performing engineering services for the 2,235-foot-high by 1,200-foot-wide Wind Energy Downdraft Tower, which will feature 25 wind-driven turbines, each with a capacity of 50 MW, for a total output of 1,250 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the projects expected to complete construction this year are FedEx Corporation's (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) $199 million parcel-sorting hub expansion in Independence, Kentucky, and Lidl Dienstleistung GmbH & Company's (Neckarsulm, Germany) $125 million grocery distribution center in Mebane, North Carolina. The FedEx project is expected to nearly double the hub's space to about 635,000 square feet, to support regional distribution operations; Lidl's new distribution center is expected to total about 900,000 square feet. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the FedEx and Lidl facilities.
Whiting-Turner also recently agreed to perform design-engineering services for Unilever plc's (NYSE:UN) (London, England) mayonnaise and relish plant expansion in Chicago, Illinois, including a $33.5 million first phase and a $45 million second phase. The first phase, which is expected to add 150,000 square feet of warehouse space and 7,000 square feet of manufacturing space, is currently slated to begin construction later this year, although the project already has faced a string of delays; the second phase, which would add 190,000 square feet of manufacturing space and 40,000 square feet of warehouse space, is not expected to begin construction until 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and Phase II.
Two other projects that are under or nearing construction are in the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry, but on opposite coasts: Stanford University's $252 million research center addition in Palo Alto, California, and University of Maryland's $123 million research and development center addition in Baltimore. Both projects involve demolishing existing buildings to accommodate 235,000-square-foot and 131,000-square-foot facilities, respectively, that will house a variety of life-science disciplines, including neuroscience, cell and molecular biology, and behavioral and microscopy-based research. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Stanford and Maryland facilities.
