Dominican Republic's EGEHID Begins Site Preparation for Hydropower Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Empresa de Generación Hidroeléctrica Dominicana (EGEHID) (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) recently began site preparation for construction of Las Placetas Hydropower Station.

With an estimated investment of $285 million, the facility will be located at the Cordillera Central region, 50 kilometers from Santiago, Dominican Republic, and will be equipped with two 43.5-megawatt (MW) hydro turbines for a total capacity of 87 MW.

The Brazilian company Andrade Gutierrez SA (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is the engineering and construction contractor. Site preparation is expected to be completed by November this year, and the construction is scheduled to last approximately 36 months. The power station will begin operations by the beginning of 2015. The project entails the construction of the power station, two powerhouses and two dams: Sabaneta on the Bao River and Los Limones on the Jagua River.

In February 2012, EGEHID and Andrade Gutierrez will launch a bidding process for the selection of the equipment supplier and electromechanical contractor.

The 80-MW Palomino Hydropower Plant, located in the San Juan region, is another project owned by EGEHID that is currently under construction and is scheduled to begin operations by the third quarter of next year.

EGEHID owns another four operational facilities in the Dominican Republic: Aguacate Hydro (52 MW), Jiguey Hydro (98MW), Moncion Hydro (54MW) and Tavera Hydro (96MW).
