Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Brazilian power producer Companhia Estadual de Energia Eletrica (CEEE) (Porto Alegre, Brazil), part of the CEEE Group, will delay a 320-day turbine replacement and upgrade outage at the 158-megawatt (MW) Passo Real Hydropower Plant. CEEE had planned to begin the outage in May, but moved it to August after the power producer was asked to maintain operations during the 2014 FIFA World Cup soccer event in Brazil.
The Passo Real Power Plant is equipped with two 79-MW Kaplan turbines generator sets, which were supplied by General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) and Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany). The hydropower station is connected to the national grid through a 230-kilovolt transmission line. The plant is located on the Jacui River, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil.
CEEE selected Andritz Hydro (Graz, Austria) as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. The work includes engineering services and the provision and assembly of a new turbine that will replace the current one in Unit 2. The new turbine will increase the unit's production capacity to 87 MW.
Brazil's National System Operator (ONS), which coordinates and controls power transmission and generating facilities on the national power system, had asked CEEE to keep the facility operating during the Soccer World Cup.
CEEE owns 16 hydroelectric power plants and has an installed power capacity of more than 1,000 MW.
