California Solar Plant Begins Operations

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 200-megawatt (MW) Tranquility solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, which is located in Fresno County, California, recently began commercial operations following its completion by Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia), and and Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario).
The project was originally developed by Recurrent Energy, and Southern Power acquired majority interest in the project. The project is located on more than 1,900 acres of agricultural land in Fresno County and is utilizing thin-film solar modules to provide clean, renewable energy to the local grid. Power generated by the Tranquility solar project will be enough to power 50,000 homes and businesses.
Recurrent Energy is having an impressive 2016, the company has added 525 MW of solar-generated energy this year alone. The 60-MW Barren Ridge project; the 100-MW Mustang solar project; the 200-MW Tranquility project; and the 175-MW Astoria solar project were all completed this year, with another 357 MW currently under construction.
Construction of the Tranquility solar project was completed by Signal Energy Constructors Chattanooga, Tennessee). Construction began in July 2015 and took slightly more than a year to complete. The project had a total investment value of $42 million. Southern Power will be responsible for operation and maintenance for the solar farm.
