Currently, the U.S. Midwest Region is home to 3,768 industrial plants, including plants that are currently in operation and those that have been decommissioned. The Midwest Region includes the states of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
Over 80-percent of the operating industrial plants and 86-percent of the employees for the region are in the states of Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa and Kansas. Missouri leads the region in both number of operating plants and total employees. The state is home to 728 plants, employing 178,038 individuals. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry is the leading employer in Missouri, with 88,411 employees and 219 plants. The Food & Beverage Industry follows with 144 plants, employing 43,000 persons. Sixty-six percent of the plants in Missouri are non-union facilities.
Minnesota follows closely behind with 694 industrial plants, with over 167,000 employees. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry leads the way with 228 plants, followed by the Food & Beverage Industry, with 162 plants, the Metals & Minerals Industry, with 74 plants, and the Power Industry with 68.
In Iowa industrial plants employ over 145,000 persons at 633 facilities. The Food & Beverage Industry employs over 41,000 people at 209 plants, while the Industrial Manufacturing Industry operates 159 plants, with over 76,000 employees.
In addition Kansas has five hundred twenty nine industrial plants with 132,000 employees and the leading industries are Industrial Manufacturing and Food & Beverage. Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota account for the remaining 638 plants and 103,865 employees.
The Midwest also has 546 decommissioned or mothballed plants. Interestingly enough, decommissioned plants follow a similar path to operational plants in relation to geographic location and industry sector distribution.
