Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Maintenance personnel at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Power Station, which is located near Columbia, Alabama, kept a watchful eye on a leak found in the 851-MW Unit 1 during the most recent re-fueling outage, which ended earlier this month. The station is owned by Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia).
Plant officials decided to take the unit offline Tuesday evening after the leaking safety-relief pressure valve was identified. Officials say that after the valve has been replaced, which is expected to take about five days, there will be series of tests to ensure the new valve is safe. The unit is scheduled to return to service Sunday.
The Farley station has two active nuclear units with a total capacity of 1,711 MW. The 860-MW Unit 2 continues to run at full power.
