Anadarko Begins Site Preparation on Bear Head LNG Terminal in Nova Scotia

Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:APC)(Houston Texas) has begun site preparation activities at its Bear Head LNG Terminal

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:APC)(Houston Texas) has begun site preparation activities at its Bear Head LNG Terminal near Point Tupper, Nova Scotia. Anadarko took over the development of the project with its recent acquisition of Access Northeast Energy Incorporated (Halifax, Nova Scotia) whom carried the LNG project through development and permitting. The $600 million LNG terminal will have a daily throughput of nearly one billion cubic feet per day of natural gas when completed in late 2007.

Anadarko expects to select an E+P+C contractor in early 2005 and is presently in talks with KBR (Houston, Texas) for the civil portion of the project and Chicago Bridge & Iron (The Woodlands, Texas) for the construction of two 160,000 cubic meter capacity cryogenic LNG tanks. To export the gas to market, Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline (Halifax, Nova Scotia) plans to construct a 20-kilometer pipeline lateral to connect the LNG terminal with its 1,300-kilometer mainline transmission system connecting natural gas developments offshore Nova Scotia with markets in Atlantic Canada and the Northeast U.S. The Bear Head project might finally solve the supply problems Maritimes has been experiencing sourcing new gas for its Phase IV expansions, which involves the construction of nine new compressor stations of 28,000 horsepower each and a 31-mile pipeline extension. Four of these stations will be constructed in Canada and the balance will be constructed in Maine. The Maritimes Phase IV expansion project has been on hold for over a year.

Full construction of the terminal should begin in Spring 2005 and will employ a construction work force of between 600-800 people over a time span of three years. Once completed the new facility will employ 50 - 60 people annually.
