Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Union Fenosa Wind Australia Pty Limited (Sydney, Australia), a subsidiary of Spanish utility firm Gas Natural SDG, said that it put the site of its proposed Paling Yard windfarm up for public exhibition after the project's environmental impact statement was deemed suitable. Union Fenosa partnered with Tract Consulting (Brisbane, Australia) as the environmental planning consultant.

The 3,900-hectare site for the project is located 60 kilometres south of Oberon Township and 60 kilometers north of Goulburn Township, in the central tablelands of New South Wales.

The proposed 175- to 180-megawatt (MW) project would include 55 wind turbines, each with a maximum capacity of 4.5 MW. The steel towers for the turbines would be 175 meters tall. The Paling Yard windfarm also would include a 330-kilovolt (kV) substation on-site and approximately 9 kilometers of overhead transmission lines of up to 500 kV. Grid connection would be established 9 kilometers east of the site, through construction of an off-site, 500-kV electrical terminal station (including a control room and other associated facilities) for the grid cut-in to the Mt. Piper-to-Bannaby 500-kV transmission line.

The windfarm would produce approximately 551 gigawatts (GW) per year, power the equivalent of 85,344 homes, and displace 535,961 tons of greenhouse gases. This project also is expected to pump $287 million into the Australian economy.

Union Fenosa will select a major turbine manufacturer--such as General Electric Energy (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) , Vestas Wind Systems (Aarhus, Denmark), Alstom (Paris, France), Gamesa (Zamudio, Spain) or Senvion (Pune, Maharashtra, India)--as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor by the second quarter of 2015. Construction kick-off is expected by the first quarter of 2016.

Currently, Union Fenosa is focusing on its other windfarm projects that are at an advanced stage, including the Crookwell 2 and Crookwell 3. The company's project development portfolio also includes the Hawkesdale Windfarm, Darlington Windfarm, Berrybank Windfarm and the Ryan Corner Windfarm.
