Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Perth, Australia)--Construction on Union Fenosa's Crookwell Windfarm project experienced further delays due to a holdup in securing a power purchase agreement (PPA) and funding arrangements. The company expects to secure the PPA and reach the final approval phase for the Crookwell II and Crookwell III projects by mid-2014.
Subject to the approvals, Union Fenosa will award a package contractor to build both windfarms, which will generate a combined output of approximately 152 megawatts (MW) of electricity for Crookwell, New South Wales.
Union Fenosa purchased the project site from a windfarm developer in 2008 and has been working on it for many years now. Early construction work began on the windfarm in 2009 and was halted due to transmission-related issues. Since then, the company is dealing with Transgrid to satisfy the connection requirements and to secure an agreement to sell the electricity produced from the windfarm.
Crookwell III was proposed by the same company in 2010, on a 1,500-hectare site, in close proximity to Crookwell II. The windfarm will have a total investment value of $100 million and is expected to provide 40 full-time (or equivalent) jobs during construction.
Crookwell II's construction will involve the erection of 46 wind turbines to generate approximately 92 MW, while Crookwell III is expected to have 30 turbines to produce 60 MW.
The projects will require the construction of site access roads; an underground network of electrical and communication cables; an electrical substation and switchyard to connect to the national electricity grid; and site control and facilities buildings.
Both Crookwell II and Crookwell III projects will connect to a 330-kilovolt (kV) transmission line, which bypasses the windfarm site. Crookwell II will involve construction of a single substation, control room and facilities for the grid connection, which also will be utilized by Crookwell III.
