Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Traditionally, the Great Lakes region is considered the bastion of the automotive industry. However, in recent years the Southern states have been enticing more and more automakers and their respective suppliers to set up shop in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and the Carolinas. Yet, despite the migration south, the Great Lakes region is still holding its own. Industrialinfo.com's research into the industry and the region shows that over $1.1 billion worth of projects are anticipated to begin construction in 2005 for the automotive industry in the Great Lakes region.

Ohio and Illinois are the other big winners in the automotive expansion dollar sweepstakes, coming in second and third, with spending to exceed $219 million and $147 million, respectively, in 2005.
All total, Industrialinfo.com is tracking thirty-two active capital projects in the automotive industry in the Great Lakes region. Companies such as General Motors, Ford, Toyotesu MidAmerica, Gentex, Bosal Industries, KUKA Flexible Production Systems Corporation, and Hundai Mobis will all open their wallets wide in the coming year, spending their money on grassroot facilities, expansions, upgrades, and revamps of existing facilities, providing thousands of construction jobs to the respective states lucky enough to be the beneficiaries of these projects.
All in all, despite the southward bound trend of recent years, the automotive industry is flourishing in the Great Lakes region. There may have been a few speed bumps in recent memory, but the industry, as a whole, has responded well and kept things on track, ensuring the Great Lakes region will profit from the industry for decades to come.
