Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held BEST Energies Incorporated (Cashton, Wisconsin) commissioned its new biodiesel plant last week in Cashton. Construction began in April 2007, and the plant is now operating at its nameplate 10 million-gallon-per-year capacity.

The process technology was provided by Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research and Innovation Center (MATRIC) (South Charleston, West Virginia) and utilizes corn oil, a by-product of ethanol production, feedstock. The plant is also capable of using other crude feedstock. The plant is about 23 miles southeast of La Crosse in Monroe County.

Biodiesel production in Wisconsin is growing, and with the BEST plant now online, the state has two operational biodiesel plants. Sanimax Energy commissioned a 20 million-gallon-per-year plant in De Forrest in March of this year and processed yellow grease from restaurants into the renewable fuel.

Two additional plants are under construction in the state. North Prairie Productions LLC (Evansville, Wisconsin) started construction on a 45 million-gallon-per-year plant in Evansville in August but recently halted construction activity because of the high price of feedstock. Midwest Biofuels LLC (Clinton, Wisconsin) says it is about two weeks away from starting biodiesel production in Clinton. This plant will have the capacity of producing 10 million gallons per year.

Additional biodiesel plants are set to be built in Owen, Milwaukee, Ripon and Chetek. After all plants are online, Wisconsin's capacity for producing biodiesel will grow to 145 million gallons annually.

Industrial Info's Ethanol Database provides a comprehensive outline of all current development activities in the emerging alternative fuels market. This database covers 124 ethanol plants in operation and 504 plants under development. It also covers 68 operational biodiesel plants and 205 biodiesel plants under development.
