Biofuel refineries are popping up all over the country to ensure ethanol and biodiesel makes it way into our gas tanks and transportation vehicles. Over the first nine months of the 2007 calendar year, over $7 billion dollars worth of capital construction has been identified by Industrial Info in the burgeoning industry. Keeping up with who is building what, how much, and where is getting to be a continuous and trying effort.
During 2006, over fourteen new biofuels plants went into operation and $776 million dollars were spent bringing the new capacity online. Over 180 new plants are forecast to begin construction in 2007 representing over $10 billion in capital spending. The 2006 year ended with an overall production capacity of over 5 billion gallons annually, a number the ethanol industry did not expect to hit until 2008. By the end of 2007, that number is expected to be over 14 billion gallons annually, if all plants move forward and go into operation as planned.
