Brazil is one of the leading countries in the development of renewable projects, thanks to its vast natural resources and wind and solar potential. But the country also shows a strong potential for natural gas-fired power projects, with almost $39.5 billion in active projects using natural gas as primary fuel, according to Industrial Info's project database. In particular, $35.3 billion worth is in the planning phase; $2.4 billion is in the engineering phase and $1.7 billion in projects is already under construction.
These projects, which total 44.45 gigawatts (GW) of new-build capacity, include large-scale, combined-cycle projects with a planned capacity above 1 GW, and peaking plants using internal combustion engines. Combined-cycle projects represent 39 GW of the total.
The projects are concentrated on areas close to the sea coast or near Brazil's borders with neighboring natural gas-producing countries; they depend on fuel imports through international pipelines or by ship in liquid phase and then re-gasified, or via offshore platforms.
Although no major cancellations have been made, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the schedule of these projects, mainly due to the federal government's decision to suspend ongoing and planned power purchase agreement (PPA) auctions for the year.
