Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Eletrobrás Termonuclear Sociedade Anônima (Eletronuclear) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) operates Brazil's two nuclear power units: the 657-megawatt (MW) Angra I and the 1,350-MW Angra II. Before the end of the month, the company will present the federal government five possible sites for the construction of two nuclear power stations in the northeastern part of the country.
Once operational, these two power stations will have a generation capacity of approximately 1,000-MW each. The site study that will be submitted to the federal authorities has considered specific locations in the states of Bahia, Sergipe, Pernambuco and Alagoas. The government is expected to select one of the five proposed sites for construction of the plants by the end of this year.
One of the locations under consideration is along the basin of São Francisco River, which is the main source of generation for several important hydroelectric plants.
These projects are part of Brazil's 2030 National Energy Plan (Plano Nacional de Energia 2030), which forsees the addition of four nuclear power stations by 2030. That goal does not include Angra III (1,350 MW), which will probably start construction in the first half of this year and be operational by mid-2015.
There is no fixed project schedule yet for any of the two nuclear plants, though at the earliest, construction could start in 2014, with commercial operations beginning in 2019.
Eletronuclear is responsible for these new projects. The company is a subsidiary of Centrais Elétricas Brasileiras Sociedade Anônima (NYSE:EBR) (Eletrobrás) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), which was established in 1997 with the purpose of building and operating nuclear power stations. At present, Eletronuclear provides 3% of Brazil's energy.
