Brazil's Klabin SA Selects O.A. Engenharia Especial for Steam Plant Upgrades at Otacilio Costa Mill

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Brazilian Paper & Wood company Klabin SA (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has awarded engineering and industrial services provider O.A. Engenharia Especial (Santa Catarina, Brazil) the contract to perform upgrades on the steam plant at the Otacilio Costa Paperboard Mill (Santa Catarina).

O.A. Engenharia Especial will carry out upgrades to the existing equipment of the steam plant to increase evaporation capacity by optimizing steam economy and improving condensate quality. The modernization of the plant also aims at renewing condensate-handling systems to enable the effective removal of organic contaminants and the reuse of condensates as process water in the paper-production process. Work at the plant started in September 2010, and the project is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2011.

Otacilio Costa's paperboard mill is located in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. The plant began operating in 2000, and it has a capacity of 370,000 tons per year of paperboard. At present, approximately 300 people work at the facility. The plant is equipped with three steam turbines with generating capacities of 17 megawatts (MW), 14 MW and 2 MW, which generate 33 MW of electricity for the plant's own consumption. The complex is also equipped with a heat-recovery steam boiler and three force-heat boilers, which recover steam for pulp production.
