Cameron LNG, Entergy Louisiana Explore Renewable Energy Agreement
Cameron LNG has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Entergy Louisiana to negotiate a 20-year service agreement to procure renewable energy from Entergy Corporation
Released Thursday, December 08, 2022
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cameron LNG has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Entergy Louisiana to negotiate a 20-year service agreement to procure renewable energy from Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana), in order to reduce carbon emissions at the Cameron liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Hackberry, Louisiana--where Industrial Info is tracking the addition of a new liquefaction train.
Whit Fairbanks, president of Cameron LNG, said in a related press release: "The MOU we have signed allows us to memorialize an agreement to bring on enough renewable power to offset the emissions for our facility, including the Train 4 expansion, when all renewable generations phases are added to the supply portfolio."
The Cameron LNG facility's partners include an infrastructure subsidiary of Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) (San Diego, California), Mitsui & Company Limited (Tokyo, Japan), Mitsubishi Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) and TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE) (Courbevoie, France).
The $4 billion Train 4 addition would add 6.75 million tons per year of capacity to the existing three-train,12 million-metric-ton-per-year liquefaction facility. The project involves utilizing electric drive motors to replace gas turbine drives, and the tie-in of facilities to sequester carbon dioxide from the new train; it is expected to kick off in 2023 with the completion in 2027. The project received approval in October from the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, and the agency also approved changes that would allow the facility to load two ships simultaneously at the related Cameron LNG Receiving Terminal. Phillip May, president and chief executive officer of Entergy Louisiana, applauded the agreement, saying: "Our customers are continuously seeking carbon-reduction options, and this is another example of us working with an industry leader to meet their own goals as well as our own." The project would add approximately 300 megawatts (MW) of demand to Entergy Louisiana's portfolio, according to the press release, as the utility aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Industrial Info is tracking $1.1 billion worth of projects from Entergy Louisiana, most of which is in the pre-construction stage and attributed to transmission and distribution (T&D). Two such projects are expected to kick off next year: a proposed $158 million project to construct a new 30-mile transmission line from the Waterford Substation to the planned Winchester Substation, to address future load growth and grid reliability in South Louisiana, and a new 15-mile line from the existing Oak Grove Substation to the proposed Lake Providence Substation. The projects are expected to wrap up in June and October 2024, respectively. Subscribers can see detailed reports for the Waterford-Winchester and Oak Grove-Lake Providence projects.
Entergy plans to kick off construction of two gas-insulated substations in the next two years: the proposed $27 million Munster Substation in Meraux, outside of New Orleans, in March 2023, and the proposed $39.5 million Start Substation, in 2024. Subscribers can see project reports for the Munster and Start projects.
Regarding renewable generation, Entergy's proposed $165 million grassroot Livonia Solar plant would feature a capacity of 150 MW utilizing photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on a single-axis tracking system. The project is planned for kickoff in June 2024. Click here for the project report.
