Canadian Clean Power Coalition Promotes Coal-Fired Generation

The Canadian Clean Power Coalition was formed nearly two years ago to promote the use of clean coal-fired power plants in Canada.

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Canadian Clean Power Coalition was formed nearly two years ago to promote the use of clean coal-fired power plants in Canada. The first phase of the Coalition's mandate will involve the retrofit of an existing coal-fired power plant with zero emission equipment and hopes to demonstrate the effectiveness of new technology. New and developing emissions control equipment will be designed to essentially eliminate NOx, SOx, and Carbon Dioxide emissions. Technology for the new equipment will be selected in 2004, after preliminary feasibility studies are completed. The demonstration plant will most likely be constructed at an existing power plant in Alberta and is scheduled to be operating by 2007. This will be followed by a grassroot power plant at another unselected Canadian site by 2012. All in all, the Coalition hopes to spend close to $650 million to build the two plants.

According to Joseph Govreau, Manager of Metals and Minerals with Industrialinfo.com, "This program is similar to the U.S. Department of Energy's Vision 21 Program. A group of mainly Canadian coal energy companies has begun initial studies for a clean coal program. The program envisions the construction of the next generation of clean coal-fired power plants in Canada. Both the Vision 21 and the Canadian Clean Power Coalition programs hope to prove that with new improved technologies, coal can be used as an environmentally friendly fuel source."

Members of the Canadian Clean Power Coalition include: ATCO Power (Edmonton, Alberta), EPCOR (Edmonton, Alberta), Electric Power Research Institute (Palo Alto, California), Luscar Limited (Edmonton, Alberta), Nova Scotia Power, a subsidiary of Emera Incorporated (TSE:EMA), Ontario Power Generation (Toronto, Ontario), SaskPower (Regina, Saskatchewan), and TransAlta Corporation (NYSE:TAC) (Calgary, Alberta).
