Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Capital Power Corporation (TSX:CPX), a subsidiary of EPCOR (Edmonton, Alberta), continues to harvest wind energy in both British Columbia and Alberta as the company finalizes the commissioning of two new wind energy facilities. The providence of Ontario also has proven to be a good resource for wind energy, as the company has begun to explore options there as well.
Capital Power began construction of both the Halkirk Windfarm (Calgary, Alberta) and Quality Windfarm (Tumble Ridge, British Columbia) in late 2010. The two facilities are expected to commence full commercial operations by 2013. Vestas Wind Systems was the supplier of the turbines utilized on both projects. The Halkirk facility features 83 of the V90 model Vestas wind turbines, while Quality spotlights 35 V90 models, as well as 44 V100 models, both of which are capable of generating 1.8 MW each. Collectively, the projects will generate nearly 300 MW of renewable energy.
Capital Power hasn't slowed down; however, the company is currently working on the construction of another 105-MW windfarm in Ontario and has an additional 90 MW of wind energy in the early stages of development, which is scheduled to begin construction by the summer of 2013.
RES Canada (Montreal, Quebec) was awarded the turn-key services for the Halkirk Windfarm in Alberta throughout the duration of construction. Mortenson Construction (Mississauga, Ontario) acted as the EPC contractor for the Quaility Windfarm.
