Chesapeake Green Fuel Corporation Begins Operations of Delaware's First Biodiesel Plant in Clayton

The $6 million plant began operations in September 2006 under Mid-Atlantic Biodiesel LLC (Clayton). Mid-Atlantic Biodiesel utilized the plant for only six months before poor market conditions forced a shutdown. The plant sat idle prior to being ordered to the auction block on January 22, 2009, under the order of Greater Atlantic Bank (Reston, Virginia), the plant's main lender.

Chesapeake Green Fuel purchased the facility for $1.35 million and began the task of retrofitting the equipment and modernizing the processes to accept multiple feedstocks, including chicken fats, soy and used fryer oil. The facility has the capacity of producing 5 million gallons of B-100 annually.

The factory is in Kent County on School Lane, approximately 14 miles northwest of Dover. Delaware requires all diesel sold in the state to contain at least 2% biodiesel.
