Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Latin America's first green hydrogen pilot plant, located in Punta Arenas, Chile, has begun production this month as scheduled and will start off by producing 130,000 liters per year (L/yr) of synthetic biofuel.
The collaborative effort between the companies Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) (Santiago, Chile) with co-developers Porsche (Stuttgart, Germany) and Siemens AG (Munich, Germany), technology providers and partner clients, represents a milestone in the production of green hydrogen in the region.
The green hydrogen produced in the Haru Oni plant, which utilizes Siemens' technology, is then used to produce green methanol. The methanol is combined with extracted CO2 and then transformed into synthetic biofuel (methanol-to-gasoline (MTG)). The produced carbon-neutral fuels will be used by cars, trucks and shipped in drums to different destinations worldwide. The facility will operate in the pilot phase for a period of time until the implementation of the expansion projects that aim at increasing the synthetic biofuel MTG production from 130,000 L/yr to 55 million L/yr in the first phase and then to 550 million L/yr in the second phase. Industrial Info monitors more than 80 Power-to-X capital projects, which represent more than US$37 billion in investments that aim at producing green hydrogen, green methanol and green ammonia. Brazil continues to be the leading country in the region, with 32 projects currently being developed. Chile, on the other hand, occupies second place with 18 capital projects, but has a small advantage of having the first one to kick off and start production so as to start the transition to use alternative energy sources.
