Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pulp, Paper & Wood company CMPC (Santiago, Chile) is awaiting approval of permits for a pulp mill expansion. The total investment cost of the project is estimated to be about $130 million.
The project seeks to increase the plant's manufacturing capacity of hardwood and softwood pulp from 1,000 tons per year to 1,500 tons per year. The modernization of the plant also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the comsumption of oil and the mill's dependence on energy from the central grid. The plant expansion will involve the addition, replacement and improvement of equipment. Plant officials anticipate having the environmental authorization by the end of February. In-house engineering will be performed. The construction phase of the project is expected to start in the first quarter of 2010 and is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2011.
Nacimiento Santa Fe Plant, located in Chile's Bío-Bío region, started operations in 1991 and employs 405 people. The mill manufactures kraft softwood pulp for the production of paper for printing and writing. Currently, the plant generates 100 MW for self-consumption, and excess capacity is sold to the Central Interconnected System (SIC).
CMPC produces and commercializes wood, pulp, tissue, papers and paper products. Located in Santiago de Chile, the company has more than 20 operating mills in various Latin American countries and exports products throughout the five continents.
