China Dominates Steel Investment in Southeast Asia

China's HBIS Group Company Limited recently partnered with Philippine steelmaker Steel Asia Manufacturing Corporation to construct a 4.5 million-ton-per-year integrated steel mill, while Wenan Steel (Malaysia) Sendirian Berhad, a Malaysian-Chinese joint venture, is slated to start site preparations for its 3 million-ton-per-year steel mill complex in Samalaju, Malaysia.

Myanmar's 2 million-ton-per-year Yangon steel mill project, which is being developed by China's Kunming Iron & Steel Holdings Company Limited, is delayed amid Myanmar's political upheaval.
