Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The kick-off ceremony for the main powerhouse foundation of Unit 5 was held at Guodian Hanchuan Power Plant on September 27, 2010. Construction officially began on the first unit of the Guodian Hanchuan Power Plant Phase III Expansion Project, also the first 1,000-megawatt (MW) ultra-supercritical unit in Hubei.
Hanchuan Power Plant is a key energy project that was built in China's Seventh Five-Year Plan (1990-95). The power plant possesses the first Chinese-made 300-MW coal-fired unit, and the first 1,000-MW coal-fired power plant in Hubei. The plant was given to China Guodian Corporation (Beijing) in November 2005, and has four 300-MW units built in Phase I and Phase II, which are owned by Guodian Changyuan Hanchuan No.1 Power Generation Company Limited (Xiaogan, Hubei) and Hubei Hanxin Power Generation Company Limited (Xiaogan), respectively. Both are subsidiaries of Guodian Changyuan Electric Power Company Limited (SZ:000966) (Wuhan, Hubei), a listed subsidiary of China Guodian Corporation.
Guodian Hanchuan Power Plant Phase III Expansion Project is directly invested by China Guodian Corporation. The project plans to build two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical coal-fired units, with a total investment of about $1.2 billion. On July 30, 2010, the first unit of the Phase III expansion received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). According to the approval, the investment in the first unit will be about $630 million. The company is trying to get approval from the NDRC for the second unit. According to the arrangement, the first unit of Phase III will begin operations in September 2012. Upon completion, Hanchuan Power Plant will be the largest coal-fired power plant in Hubei.
