China to Build First CAP1400-based Demonstrative Nuclear Power Plant in Shandong

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Following the smooth progression of two AP1000-based nuclear power projects in Shandong and Zhejiang, respectively, China has acquired key technologies to build a third generation of nuclear power projects. Based on the introduction of AP1000, as well as the progressing in self-reliance engineering, China decided to build its first CAP1400-based demonstrative nuclear power plant in Shandong, disclosed Wang Binghua, chairman of State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) (Beijing), on January 26, 2010.

In December 2009, SNTPC Demonstrative Power Plant Company Limited (SNTPC Demonstrative) (Beijing), which is jointly invested by SNTPC (55%) and China Huaneng Group (Beijing) (45%), was unveiled in Beijing. As the owner for the demonstrative project, SNTPC Demonstrative will be responsible for the construction, management and commercial operation of CAP1400-based demonstrative power plant as well as its future expansion of CAP1700-based demonstrative project.

The CAP1400-based Demonstrative Power Plant is at Shidaowan in Rongcheng, Weihai City, of China's Shandong province. As reported, CAP1400 unit has a design life of 60 years, with availability not to be less than 93% and an annual power output of 11 billion kilowatt-hours. Conception design of CAP1400 has been performed by SNTPC Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute (SNERDI) (Shanghai). A preliminary feasibility study report of the demonstrative project has passed the examination organized by the General Institute of Electric Power Planning and Design (Beijing) in October 2009. Presently, a detailed feasibility study of the project has been performed smoothly. It's expected that the preliminary design will be completed by the end of 2011. According to the schedule, the CAP1400-based Demonstrative Power Plant will begin construction of the first bucket of concrete in April 2013, and begin operation in December 2017.
