Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the top planner of China, approved Phase I of the Hebei Fengning Pump-Storage Power Station in August 2012, according to an announcement from the National Energy Administration (NEA) on August 27.
The Hebei Fengning Pump-Storage Power Station, located in Fengning County of Chengde City, in North China's Hebei province, is the largest pump-storage power station worldwide to be planned. The power station has a total planned capacity of 3,600 megawatts (MW), to be built in two phases. Of which, six pump-storage, hydraulic turbine generating units, each of 300 MW, will be built in Phase I, with a total investment of about $1.6 billion. According to the approval, the project mainly comprises an underground powerhouse and the associated water-conveying passage. Both the upper and lower reservoirs will use the existing reservoir.
Hebei Fengning Pump-Storage Company Limited (Chengde, Hebei), a subsidiary of State Grid Xin Yuan Holding Company (Beijing) with joint investment from Hebei Provincial Construction and Investment Corporation Limited (Shijiazhuang, Hebei), is responsible for the development and future operations of the project. Hydrochina Beijing Engineering Corporation (Beijing), a subsidiary of the Power Construction Corporation of China (Beijing), is responsible for the design and engineering service of the project.
Early in October 2010, the feasibility study report prepared by HydroChina Beijing had passed the examination of the expert panel under the General Institute of Hydropower and Water Resources Planning and Design in Beijing. In May 2012, the project received approval from the NEA. The project received approval from the NDRC in August 2012.
With the official approval from the NDRC, construction of the project is ready to kick off shortly. As per reported, the total construction period of the project will be 86 months. Upon completion, the project will promote the development of other types of energies such as wind power, solar power and thermal power in Tianjin, solving the problem of insufficient peak regulation capacities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan grid, and will play an important meaning in promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, environmental protection, and local economic development.
