Chrysler Expands Illinois Assembly Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Chrysler Group LLC (Auburn Hills, Michigan) is currently expanding the company's automotive assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois.

Site preparation began in July of this year for a 592,000-square-foot building addition at the existing 4 million-square-foot assembly complex. A $4 million building permit was issued in July, and a $1.5 million permit for the foundation and building addition was issued in August. Completion is slated for the fall of 2011.

The Belvidere Assembly Plant opened in 1965 and is adjacent to the Belvidere Satellite Stamping Plant. The stamping plant produces sheet metal parts for the production line. In 2006, the Belvidere Assembly Plant became the first Chrysler plant to have an entirely robotic body shop. The plant assembles the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot, all of which will be discontinued by 2012. The company has not yet announced what will replace these vehicles.
