Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The construction contract for Southeast Shanxi-Nanyang-Jingmens 1,000 kV Ultra High Voltage (UHV) AC Experimental Demonstration Power Transmission Line Project was signed at Taiyuan, which marks the official construction start.
Southeast Shanxi-Nanyang-Jingmens 1,000 kV UHV AC Experimental Demonstration Power Transmission Project will cross Shanxi, Henan and Hubei, for a total distance of 645 kilometers. Since groundbreaking in August 2006, civil work and various foundation constructions were smoothly carried out, and eighteen power transmission and distribution companies in China have won bids for the project. Vice President of State Grid Corporation of China, Zhen Baosen said the entire project is expected to be operational in 2008.
UHV refers to the power transmission grid of AC 1,000 kV and DC 800kV or above, which could improve the efficiency and reduce losses on long distance and large capacity power transmission. The purpose of building the first 1,000 kV AC power transmission project in Shanxi is to optimize energy resource allocation. Shanxi is the largest coal producing province in China, traditionally. Due to a bottleneck in transportation, the province is building transmission lines and more mine mouth coal-fired power plants to transmit power directly to other provinces instead of transporting coal.
On April 4, 2007, the Standardization Technical Commission of Ultra High Voltage for AC Power Transmission was established under the organization of the State Grid; the open ceremony and the first working meeting was held in Beijing at the same time. According to the UHV 2006 International Symposium held in Beijing, UHV has become an important orientation in world power transmission technology development, and has entered into the actual engineering application stage; the construction of the 1,000 kV AC and DC 800 kV ultra high voltage experiment and demonstration project in China, and the rapid development of an ultra high voltage grid has very important meaning not only for China, but also many countries and regions in the world.
