Crimson Renewable Energy Opens California's Largest Biodiesel Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Crimson Renewable Energy LP (Denver, Colorado) has officially opened California's largest biodiesel plant in Bakersfield. The company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week to mark the opening of the plant, which is now running at full nameplate-production capacity.

The plant has the capacity to produce 30 million gallons per year of biodiesel from multiple feedstocks, including animal fats, yellow grease and virgin vegetable oils. The facility also produces about 2.4 million gallons per year of crude glycerin that is used in a variety of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food applications.

The plant, located near Interstate 5 and Old River Road in Bakersfield, features a closed-loop continuous production process and will operate seven days a week, 24 hours per day. It employs 14 people.

Cost estimates to build the plant are in the $30 million range.

California currently has a dozen biodiesel plants in operation, producing more than 70 million gallons of the renewable fuel annually. Six additional plants are under development in the state.
